Friendly Confines of Fenway Park

Oh hey folks, I’m still alive. I always forget that May ends up being a busy month for me, plus I’ve been suffering from my allergies so I’ve been laying low.

BUT

I went to a Red Sox game this week!

It’s Senior Week for the students on campus, and one of their trips was to a Sox game on Tuesday. They had to purchase a certain amount, so they opened them up to faculty and staff. The seats were in the bleachers but I didn’t care because I haven’t been to Fenway in two years. Two people from my office and myself decided to go.

We left campus around 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, and there ended up only being seven of us going, so at least we could spread out on the bus. We got to Fenway in about two hours and had time to hit the bathrooms and concessions before going to our seats.

Our tickets included food vouchers, so my first order of business was getting a hot dog and a Sam Adams ’76. I would go back to get a pretzel and another beer later in the game.

The Sox were playing the Colorado Rockies that night, and Chris Sale started. And struck out 17 batters with no recorded jerseys cut up prior to the game. J.D. Martinez, Rafael Devers, and Michael Chavis all hit home runs, and Andrew Benintendi went 0-5 😦 Sale was fast and the game went by pretty quickly but went into extras around 10:00 p.m.-ish.

People filed out after the 10th inning, including the seniors from our school. We decided to stay until the end of the 11th just in case.

The weather for that night was around 46 degrees and windy, and it started to mist toward the end. You know, New England in May. I wore a long sleeve shirt, hoodie, my winter jacket, jeans, Converse, and a winter hat. I also realized I don’t own any Red Sox winter gear.

The Sox ended up losing 5-4 in 11 innings. We left Boston after 11:00 p.m., made it back to campus around 12:45 a.m., and I was home and in bed by 1:15 a.m. It sucked having to get up for work after 6:00 a.m. but I was happy I made it out to Fenway.

To me, it’s just a place where I could sit forever. I’ve been to now five Sox games, so I’m familiar with Fenway, but it’s so much bigger than it looks on TV. There’s just something special about the park.

This won’t be my only baseball game this year, though. In June I’m going to a Hartford Yard Goats game, which I’m looking forward to.

  1. Years ago, my brother had to buy a blanket at a Yankees game because it was so cold. I own a Yankees hoodie, but we got a day that was cooler than I expected a couple years ago, so I bought another one.

    • When I went to a game in 2015 it was in April and it got significantly cooler once we were in the park so I had to buy a fleece blanket. At least it’s a nice blanket and I still use it haha

  3. Oooo baseball games!! I went to my very first one two summers ago! It was a blue jays game. Not really my thing but it was an interesting way to spend the evening

  4. I’m so jealous you got to see Sale’s 17 strikeouts in person! He was absolutely crushing it, I can’t believe they lost. Glad you got to make it to a game, though! 🙂

  5. Fenway is the best. It’s not even that close, and I’ve been to about 15 ballparks. Looks like you had a great time, despite the weather.

    I’m taking my family on Father’s Day, it’s Yankees at White Sox that weekend at Sox Park. I take my mom to a game every year which is a great tradition. I think I’ve been to Comiskey Park I and Comiskey Park II every year since 1982. I love it!
