Hartford Yard Goats Game

I’m surprised it took me this long this year but I finally went to a Yard Goats game! I usually go to at least one game a summer, and this past Thursday was my time this season. Josh and I went together, which was about one year after we went to our first game together. When we were just babies! (about two weeks into officially dating)

I was working from home on Thursday, so Josh was able to come over right after I finished working and we left a little after 5:00 p.m. since gates opened at 6:00 p.m. The weather was good; mid-80s but not super hot and no chance of rain.

Our first stop was Bear’s BBQ out in left field. We both got Mac Attacks—pulled pork over mac and cheese—and a summer ale from Back East Brewing.

After we finished eating, we took a walk around the stadium and stopped to see the baby goats. Yes, they have baby goats at the stadium.

Josh wanted to stop in the team store, and since beverages aren’t allowed inside, I stood outside and held both of our beers. A woman was also standing outside holding two drinks, like me, and said to me, “Yours inside, too?” I laughed and said yes. Josh ended up getting the blue Yard Goats shirt he has on in the picture above.

We ended up sitting in the same section as last year, just one row back from those seats. I always buy aisle seats, so we were the last two seats in the row. The Yard Goats were playing the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the double A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. It was Country Night, which they went all out for: playing country music pretty much all the time, the Yard Goats players on the scoreboard were photoshopped to look like cowboys, and some of the in-between inning games were country-themed.

Other snacks and drinks for the night included pretzels and Sam Adams Wicked Hazy (for both of us), and a Bud Light draft (for me). I always have to get a pretzel at a baseball game, and Bear’s BBQ is a go-to at the stadium.

The game was tied up 2-2 in the 5th, and then the Yard Goats scored on a single and then a pick off error to make it 4-2. The Goats scored two more runs in the 6th to make it 6-2, and the final score was 7-4 Goats. I’m glad the action picked up toward the end of the game.

We didn’t get out until after 10:00 p.m., but thankfully we were both off Friday so we didn’t have to rush home. Both of us had a really great time and promised we wouldn’t wait until August to go to a game next season. Tickets are affordable, good food and beer selections, and it’s something fun to do.
