I Finally Went Ice Skating!

This was about a month in the works but I finally went ice skating on Tuesday! The MGM casino that was built in August that’s ~20 minutes from my house put in an ice skating rink in its plaza. My friend, Kristen, and I were going to go earlier this month, but the weather was unpredictable or snowy or something. So I was happy that we were finally able to go this week.

It was a fairly good-sized rink, and we lucked out and were the only people out skating. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that it was about 25 degrees. At least some of the buildings blocked the wind.

The building in the back of the first picture—with the Indian motorcycle on it—is the armory that was built in the late 1800s and was damaged during the June 2011 tornado that went through Western MA. It was turned into an event space and comedy club as part of the casino.

I haven’t been skating since I was like 10 or 11, so it’s been a while. But it’s like riding a bike. Kristen and I ended up skating loops around the rink, and about 10 or so minutes in, I fell on my butt. Kristen skated over and made sure I was okay, while laughing at me.

I ended up falling again, though this time was a lot worse. I got too aggressive with skating and looked up at the snowflake lights and as I wondered why they weren’t lit up, I was skating too fast into the wall and tried to catch myself and full on wiped out.

It must have looked so bad that one of the girls in the little booth where we got our skates opened the window and asked if I was okay. Kristen skated over, and while laughing, took pictures of me on the ice.

That second fall hurt a little, and my knees felt cold. And were cold for most of the night. We ended up skating for about 45 minutes before deciding to head in just before 8:00 p.m. Granted, since we were the only ones there, we probably could have skated until closing at 9:00 p.m., but it was getting colder.

After a bathroom stop, we headed to the Lobby Bar, which I, for some reason, didn’t realize was the actual lobby to the hotel that’s in the casino. Since it was a Tuesday night, there was hardly anyone there. All of the drinks are book themed, which I thought was awesome. Kristen got the Bibiddi Bobiddi Booze, which was made with vodka, fresh lemon, strawberry syrup, and sparkling wine. I got the Tequila Mockingbird, which was obviously made with tequila, fresh lemon, dry vermouth, and strawberry syrup.

It came in a bird glass.

It was awkward to drink out of its butt/tail but I thought the glass was awesome. The bar area has a bunch of sitting areas and books everywhere.

That’s where we sat, and I took a few pictures of the book stacks, which I assumed are real books. There was a collection with an Indian motorcycle on its spines; Indian motorcycle started in the city in the early 1900s.

After we finished our drinks, we walked around the casino floor for a little while before going home. That was my third time at the casino but first time actually doing something there. More events will be happening there once the weather gets warmer, so I’m hoping to go back soon. I think Kristen and I are going to hit the sports bar soon.

Do you like ice skating? When was the last time you went? Did you fall as much as I did?

  1. I had figure skating lessons when I was in grade 1. Then I sprained my ankle that year and it didn’t heal properly so skating after hasn’t really been much of an option. After a while my ankle just snaps and rolls over. I haven’t been skating since I was like 15 lol

  2. Looks like you had an awesome time! I love that bird cocktail! I definitely would have ordered that too haha. The last time I went ice skating was maybe 2 years ago with Connor and my little cousin. It was Connors first time ice skating and the was way better than me. I think I only fell once that time, but I realized I’m not as good at ice skating anymore. I feel like I used to go every weekend in middle school so I was good back then!

    • My dad and I used to go skating at a pond in town when I was younger but we stopped when I was like 10 or 11, so it had been a long time. I feel like skating is a skill that can come back to you but you can still be really bad at it haha.

  3. I haven’t been ice skating in aaages, I’d definitely like to go again sometime soonish. It’s great that you got the rink all to yourselves! Sounds like a blast. 🙂

That bar looks so cool, too! And that bird glass is just adorable, as much as I’d dislike drinking out of its rear haha.

    • I think the 20 degree temperature is one reason why we had it to ourselves, but it wasn’t too bad once we were skating around. My upper body was sore a day later from trying to catch myself from falling haha.

I’d love to know where they got the bird glasses, and it makes me wonder what other shapes are available.
