So I Got a New Laptop…

In the words of Donna and Tom from Parks and Recreation, “Treat yo self!” I recently treated myself to a new laptop: a 2020 13.3″ MacBook Pro. And I love it.

The laptop I was using was a 2015 Surface Pro 3 that I got before my senior year of college. I liked that it was thin and light enough that I could carry it with me to classes to take notes and work on papers. I also used it for grad school, but looking back know, I’m honestly surprised I got through grad school on it. The one thing I really liked about the Surface was that the tablet part separated from the keyboard so I could easily watch Netflix in bed.

Within the last 6 months or so, I noticed that it was a bit slow and the fan would kick on if I tried to run 2 different programs or multitask. It was also slow to run Photoshop, which I use to edit photos for my blog.

I’ve never been a Mac user. I remember in middle school they made us use Macs—those old desktop computers that came in a variety of colors—and I was never really on board. I was brought up using PCs and felt much more comfortable using those. Granted, I do have an iPhone and have had one since 2012, and I like the interface on them. In my old job out of college, we used PCs and now in my current job we use Macs in our department. I have a desktop iMac Pro that created a bit of a learning curve for me the first 2 weeks of my job, but now I love it. So when I was thinking about getting a new laptop, I knew I was going to get a Mac, which is something me from 10 years ago would laugh at.

I did a bit of research—with help from my dad—on the model/style that I wanted and ended up getting the 13.3″ inch, 10th generation i5, 16 GB, and 512 SSD model with the touch bar—in space gray. It was definitely a splurge, but I know I’ll be using it for years to come. I ordered it from Costco and I’ve been using it for about a week now.

And I love it. I’m really happy with my choice. It’ll also allow me to be able to do more work for my blog—especially with anything related to Photoshop and editing photos—and I also want to actually write a new story, so I feel better equipped with this laptop than my old one.

What kind of computer do you use? Are you team PC or team Mac?

  1. I am very much team PC! I have an Asus I bought last September and its great! For work I have a Chromebook and its so frustrating at times but I’m getting used to it.

I remember when I went to Scotland when I was 25, I was emailing my parents from the free to use apple computers in the hotel and I literally had to ask someone who worked there how to get the @ into the email address… because I couldn’t get it. Ridiculous! I’ve had an iphone for just over 2 years and honestly its starting to really annoy me with its 10 min battery power and apps crashing every two seconds. It was a mistake purchase but I was fed up and didnt change it LOL and was drawn into its chrome pink shimmer and cute cases I can buy on amazon 😂😂

  2. I’m definitely a PC. When I was working for my church, our pastor tried to convert me to Mac, but I just couldn’t get into it. I do have an iPhone, but that’s as far as I’ll go. I have an HP laptop that I’ve been using since 2015 and I’m pretty sure it’s nearly time to start looking for a replacement. I’m starting to notice the lack of speed and the excessive fan usage.

  3. Team Mac all the way! My kids hated it when they were growing up and begged for PC but I stood firm. Now they are adults and two of them are team Mac now. Our son is still a PC-er but that’s because he plays games and I will admit that the Macs are a little slower when it comes to that. Congrats on your new toy! I just recently got a new desktop Mac and it is so much faster than the old one.

    • My dad works in IT and has always used PCs so that’s why I used them growing up. He doesn’t use Macs at all so I’ve been on my own haha. And thanks! I’m still so obsessed with it and I’m glad I splurged a bit and I know it’ll last for a long time.
