Final 5k Training

So, tomorrow’s the big day of my 5k race that I’ve been training for. I signed up for it at the end of April, and I can’t believe it’s already here. Back then, training for three months seemed like a long time, but here we are.

My friend and I are departing my house at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow morning to get to Newport for 10:00 a.m., when registration opens. We’re going to take the backroads through Connecticut into Rhode Island, so we won’t hit any traffic in the morning.

The race starts at 12:00 p.m, the beer and food festival opens at 12:30 p.m., and last call is at 3:50 p.m. When I run outside, my 5k time is about 40 minutes with walking ~2 minutes in between each mile, and when I run inside, my 5k time is ~45 minutes of straight running. At least I’m kind of consistent, so I expect to finish by 12:45 p.m. The running joke at work is that my friend/co-worker that’s running with me will just pass out at the start line, I’ll run and finish the race and then go back to pick her up.

I mostly trained because of my asthma to build up my endurance so I can run 3.1 miles more than once. She’s going with more of a “Hey, let’s see what happens” thing, which is fine. I’m not sure if we’ll jog together or if we’ll separate through the race. She’s excited to go, though.

I ran twice this week: 3.1 miles on the treadmill on Tuesday and 2 miles outside on Thursday. I think I’ll be a little nervous tomorrow before the race starts because it’s my first time running with other people, and there were over 1,200 people who ran last year according to the online results. (Also, there were three people who ran it in like 16 minutes. At that point, just go run a marathon.)

I found a cute little restaurant and ice cream place in Jamestown for us to hit on the way back for food, and I’m excited to go to Newport, or at least drive through it. I’ve only been to Rhode Island a few times and would like to go back again in the future.

I’m hoping to take a bunch of pictures throughout the day and put together a post for next week. Wish me luck, and someone should definitely do a wellness check on Sunday to make sure I survive.

  1. Running..I use to love it so much, but the older I got, the holder it got. I’m not a big fan of it now, but I know it’s a necessity for good health and all that. Keep at it! Make August another mile marker for you 🏃‍♀️

  2. I’m sure if you stick to it, you’ll reach your goal. I remember I had to March a 15k route in basic training back in 2003 ( a much younger me 😅). That was one beast of a trip, but at the end is so gratifying. I urge you to push on, Becky! Take care 😁
