3 Year Anniversary Trip to Maine

Folks, Josh and I have made it to three years—THREE YEARS. That’s so many days to annoy the same person. Our official anniversary is July 20, but since Josh has Thursdays and Fridays off from work and I have Fridays off during the summer, we decided to go to Maine for two days. This is my third summer going up to Maine, and I absolutely love going.

As I’ve explained in the past, Josh’s family has a place at a campground in Kennebunk, so we have a free place to stay. It has all of the modern amenities: running water, electricity, AC, four walls, and a few pull-out couches. (For someone who can be picky about sleeping at new-ish places, I sleep pretty well in the trailer.)

We left Wednesday night after Josh got out of work, and unfortunately, drove most of the almost three hours in the rain. But we made it to Maine just after 9:30 p.m.

We were pleasantly surprised to learn that Pennie, Josh’s family’s dog, was going to be with us in the trailer! His mom was staying in Maine Wednesday through Sunday, so she brought Miss Pennie with her.

Where We Went/What We Did

Our plans for Thursday were pretty low-key. Between brunch and dinner, we were planning to just hang out at the campground.

I asked Josh if he could set up the hammock for me, and as we were taking the pieces out of the shed, his aunt next door asked if I wanted to use hers instead. (Josh’s family owns three trailers in a row at the campground; I joke and say it’s the family compound. His aunt, uncle, and grandfather were up in the trailer next to us.) So I was set up in their little backyard, and it was great.

You best bet I brought books with me. I read about 100 pages of this book while Josh hung out on the trailer’s front porch with Pennie.

After we got back from The Port, we had a fire! Josh’s mom joined us and we all made s’mores.

Where We Ate

Mike’s All Day Breakfast: Josh and I went here last year for brunch, so we wanted to go back again. We got there around 10:30 a.m. and there was a bit of a wait; I think we were sat just before 11:00 a.m. Josh got Irish eggs benedict and I got a western omelette.

Boathouse: This restaurant was new to both of us! In the first picture on the left below, where the “LOVE” sign is on the side of the building, that’s where the outdoor dining is for the Boathouse. We never realized the building was actually a restaurant until I looked it up.

For drinks, I got the No Pain No Gain (rum, pineapple, coconut, blood orange), and Josh got whatever the rotating IPA tap was. For our meals, I got a crispy fried chicken sandwich, and Josh got the Big Fish. Since it was our anniversary trip, we decided to be fancy and get dessert: Maine blueberry crisp.

Old Vines Wine Bar: After dinner, we stopped to get a glass of wine at a wine bar near The Port. I got a Sauvignon Blanc, and Josh got a Reisling.

Other Notes

Since returning home, I can tell I got bit by some mosquitos from being in the hammock/underneath the trees. I had used bug spray and Josh’s mom gave me some bug repellent contraption, but it’s inevitable. I think I have six bites on my left leg and three on my right.

Where We Went/What We Did

Nubble Lighthouse: We visited my second-ever lighthouse! (My first was the Portland Head last year.) This lighthouse was built in 1879 on a tiny island off-shore in York. You can only see the lighthouse from a distance at Sohier Park.

Marginal Way: We first went to the Marginal Way in Ogunquit two years ago on our first trip to Maine and decided to go back this time around. It’s a 1.25-mile walk on a paved path along the Atlantic Ocean.

Perkins Cove: At the end of the Marginal Way is Perkins Cove! It’s a tiny spot with some restaurants and shops. Josh always stops in the candy store to get Swedish fish, so we did that, before walking onto the drawbridge.

Hardings Books: Okay, so, this would fall more into the “well, we tried to go there” category. We went to this bookstore last year, and since we were already driving through Wells after getting ice cream at Scoop Deck, I wanted to stop. I guess the store moved from its location last year (which wasn’t really noted well anywhere online) and was moved to the back of someone’s home? I think maybe the old guy who owns the bookstore? We went in the “new” location and the selection was much, much less, and it was just kinda weird, so we left after a few minutes.

Where We Ate

Kport Bagel: This was such a super cute shop in Kennebunk! (It’s just down the street from The Port area.) There were a few other little shops around the bagel place; we didn’t go into them this time but want to the next time we go. Josh and I both got everything bagels with veggie cream cheese, and they were so good.

Backyard Coffeehouse and Eatery: I found this restaurant in Ogunquit, about a five-minute walk from the Marginal Way. Josh and I both got the Perkins Cove sandwich (smoked turkey, tomatoes, lettuce, sun-dried tomato mayo, Swiss cheese on multigrain bread).

Scoop Deck: I will never say no to ice cream. The shop has been located in Wells for over 40 years and is well known for its flavor board and massive flavor offerings. Josh got orange sherbert and I got cherry amaretto; he ate half of his even before I could get a picture, so I just got one of my cone.

Duffy’s Tavern and Grill: We wanted to grab a quick dinner before heading back home, so we went to Duffy’s in Kennebunk. I think we were one of two tables in the restaurant at 5:00 p.m. on a Friday. Of course, we got pretzels for an appetizer (Josh also had a coupon for a free one from a local mini-golf scorecard), and for dinner, I got the California Wrap and Josh got chicken parm.

Other Notes

I’m determined to find another used bookstore for us to go to when we return to Maine in August—which will be in two weeks from this Wednesday.
