What I Read in 2023

Here’s a monthly breakdown of the books I read last year! I read a total of 76, surpassing my goal of 60 (and is the same amount that I read in 2022). In past years, I used Goodreads stats for these kinds of posts, but this year I’m using Storygraph’s stats because I like how they’re presented. (I used both Goodreads and Storygraph to track my books this year.)

Other stats:

  • Longest book: Under the Dome by Stephen King (1,074 pages)
  • Shortest book: Nothing Is Wrong and Here Is Why by Alexandra Petri (240 pages)
  • Average book length: 388 pages
  • Time to finish each book: Around 8 days
  • 2023’s average rating: 3.87

And here are just some other notes I have about my year in books and what I’m thinking for this upcoming year:

  • I read mostly all of Louise Penny’s books in 2023, and I think I found my favorite series. Aside from one book I gave 3 stars, the rest were either 4 or 5, and I’ve started to buy my favorite at used bookstores to have my own copies.
  • I also got into Karin Slaughter’s books because her Will Trent series was made into a series of the same name on ABC. The show seems to be loosely based on the books, but I still really like her style of writing.
  • The majority of the books came from the new fiction section at the town library (shoutout to the public library, one of my favorite places!); I also took advantage of the library on campus at work since staff can take out books for an entire semester.
  • For 2024, my goal is 60 books, the same as 2023, mostly because I know it’s an attainable goal for myself. I want to try to get into audiobooks; as a premium member on Spotify I get 15 hours of audiobook listening each month, and I also have access to Libby and hoopla through my town library. And if I don’t like a book, I won’t force myself to read it; we’re not afraid of DNF’ing a book.
