Catching Up Over Coffee: May 2021

Life

Hello folks! I am still alive! May has been SUCH a busy month for me.

The end of April and early May is always a busy time for me at work since it’s the end of the spring semester. We took on a new feat this year by doing a virtual Commencement with live portions. I handled the social media posts leading up to the weekend and was on campus in the field house—where we usually have Commencement—to post live from the event. There were live portions but also pre-recorded sections. It was our first time ever doing something like this and we all breathed a sigh of relief when the weekend was over.

The theater group I volunteer with had their first fully streamed musical this month. I was able to stop by one of the dress rehearsals and then a few of us got together to watch the stream. The musical was Something Rotten and it was my first time ever seeing it; I really enjoyed it and have been listening to the soundtrack on my drives. I had been helping with their social media but this summer I’m going to be shifting my talents to helping with videos, e-blasts, and the website.

I took last week off from work because my birthday was last Tuesday. (I always take vacation time around my birthday because it usually falls around Memorial Day plus I refuse to work on my birthday.) My mom and I share a birthday, so we went out to dinner Tuesday night. And then on Wednesday I thought I was going over my boss’s house to exchange gifts (his birthday was in the middle of the month) but it turned out to be a surprise birthday party for me with some of our co-workers! I totally wasn’t expecting it at all but it was so nice to finally be able to hang out with everyone since we’re all vaccinated now.

Another reason why I’ve been so busy is that I bought a condo! I’ll have more information in June once things are more concrete but it happened super quickly and I spent most of my vacation making phone calls and appointments. My closing date is in early July so June will be another hectic month for me. One good thing is that the condo is still in town—it’s on the other side of town from where I’m currently living with my parents—and I’ve already recruited some of my co-workers to help me move.

Running

Uh, what’s running? I ran 3 times this month 😂 Whoops.

Writing

Hahahahah yeah, no. I’m pretty sure that Google doc is collecting dust right now.

Sports

The Sox aren’t doing too bad, unlike my fantasy baseball team. It’s embarrassing how bad I am at fantasy baseball.

What I’m Watching

TV/DVR

  • Keeping Up with the Kardashians
  • NCIS
  • FBI: Most Wanted
  • Law & Order: SVU
  • Law & Order: Organized Crime
  • To Catch a Smuggler
  • A Late Show with Stephen Colbert
  • Home Town Takeover
  • Bar Rescue
  • Good Girls
  • Louisiana Law
  • Prodigal Son
  • Catfish
  • New Amsterdam

Netflix

  • Big Time Rush (S2E27-S3E2)
  • The Circle (S1E1-S2E10)

What I’m Reading

  • When No One is Watching by Alyssa Cole: 4 stars
  • Our Team: The Epic Story of Four Men and the World Series That Changed Baseball by Luke Epplin: 5 stars
  • Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Elle Cosimano: currently reading
  • The Violence Inside Us: A Brief History of an Ongoing American Tragedy by Chris Murphy: currently reading

(It hasn’t been a good reading month for me, which is out of character. I just haven’t had the time or when I do try to read I can’t concentrate on the book. So I’m just trying my best and reading when I can.)

Other Stuff!

Instead of reading I’ve been cross stitching! I finished my second one which is ice cream cones and started a third one. My parents got me a bunch of cross stitching supplies for my birthday—like fabric, thread, hoops, etc.—so I can start ordering patterns now from Etsy instead of the kits. This is the one I’m working on now.

I also suffered pretty badly with my allergies this month. I normally have issues with pollen every spring but this year it was SO bad. I got an air purifier for my bedroom that’s helped and thankfully we’ve had some rain this weekend to wash away the pollen.

My Questions For You

  1. How was your month?
  2. What was one fun thing you did in May?
  3. What does your June look like?

  1. YAY CONDO!!! Way to go!!!

Big news from my month! But gotta wait on that lol but it made May super awesome.

One fun thing in May? Lol what is fun, Becky? 😂 we are still in lock down…

June I am looking forward to finishing up school, my first “year end” even if it’s not a proper year end. But I think I have it all ready. And still holding out hope that we can go back to work before the school year ends.

    • Thank you! 😊

I can’t wait to hear what your big news is! 😬

Ooh yeah, it sucks that you guys are still in lockdown. Is there a set date for it to end or is it a we’ll see how things are going and then make a decision?

      • Our “stay at home order” is ending tomorrow. But that just means we can go out for non-essential things.

June 14th is when we enter “phase 1” of our new opening plan. Which is sector based but regional.

Schools will stay closed though. At least I’m 95% sure. They made a half announcement today and I am pretty upset over it. But it has been a SUPER draining day so learning that just added to it.

  2. Congrats on your condo! That is so exciting; I can’t wait to hear more about it. Will your dog be coming with you?
I watched The Circle back in college and really enjoyed it. And that birthday week sounded really fun and special. You sound like you have a really sweet boss and co-workers.

How was your month? Interesting and Unexpected
What was one fun thing you did in May? Bring my baby boy home for a week.
What does your June look like? Up in the air. Hopefully it includes bringing my baby boy home for good. 🙂

    • Thank you! ☺️ No, my pups will be staying at home since they’re family pets. I can have a cat or small dog at the condo; I’m thinking down the road to get a cat. I am super grateful for my co-workers/friends and that we were able to get together for a happy celebration.

I’m always thinking of you and your fam! I hope you get to take him home soon 💕

  3. Happy Birthday Becky! Cross-stitching is such a relaxing hobby, isn’t it!? I did my first ever cross stitch last year; it was a freehand quote saying “Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be.” Since I did it freehand it took alot longer than it should have and was quite frustrating, but the end result was perfect for my 2 year anniversary gift (cotton) to my husband. 🙂

    • Thanks! 🙂 For the most part it’s a relaxing hobby haha. Having to count a lot of squares to start a new section stresses me out; if I have the TV on, I’ll mute it so I can count 😂 But it’s super satisfying to finish a project!

      • Yeah… I had to start over on a couple of letters due to spacing issues and I wanted to just throw in the towel and add ellipsis.
Grow old along with me, the best is…. It has the same effect I think. 😀

  4. Congrats on the condo!!! How exciting. One fun thing I did in May was visit a casino for some slot machine gambling. Managed to stay and play for about 5 hours and come home with half the money we went up with. Considering the fact that my husband lost 2/3 of the money we went up with, I call that a win! Watching my Giants play baseball is fun again this year. They’ve had some pretty bad losses but also some really exciting wins. They are doing better than most people expected. June is more of the same. Our daughter (who lives with us) will be visiting her boyfriend in another state for about 2 months so that will be a little different around here. I’ll be outnumbered, 2 to 1 – LOL. Again, congrats on the condo. That’s a huge step.

    • Thank you! ☺️ It’s been super stressful so far with all of the appointments and paperwork and making sure everything is in order, plus figuring out what furniture and other things I’ll need to buy. Thankfully some of my co-workers are going to help me move which will be such a big help.

Your casino trip sounds like it was fun! And some sort of return to normalcy, being able to go out places again. I just looked at the NL West standings, wow I wasn’t expecting the Giants to be in first. I guess they are doing pretty well this season haha.
