Maine in September

Last week was my last trip up to Maine for the year! Like last year, I was able to make it up three times over the summer, and Josh and I made the most of our last trip there together. (He’ll go up next week to help his parents close the trailer for the season.)

Josh’s mom was up there, too, so that meant their pup, Pennie, was going to hang out with us. She sat with me for a bit while I was reading on Thursday afternoon.

Thursday, September 25

Very much like our trip in September last year, it poured all day Thursday. It must be a sign.

Mike’s All Day Breakfast: We went here for brunch, one of our favorite breakfast places to go to. I got a western omelette, and Josh got Irish eggs Benedict.

Portland Head Lighthouse: In theory, I guess, it was a good idea to go in the pouring rain, but we were soaked by the time we left. But surprisingly, there were other people there, too, in Fort Williams Park. I want to go back on a nice day, walk around the grounds, and bring stuff for a picnic.

Oxbow Blending & Bottling: A new-to-use brewery! My only complaint is that there’s street parking, and very limited street parking at that. I’d hate to see how it is on a nice day. After circling three times, we finally found a spot. Then the main part of the brewery was closed for a private event, so we ended up in the small front bar. We each got flights and liked the beers. I wanted to get a pack of cans to go, but they didn’t have the style I wanted (only in a large bottle).

The East Ender: Another new-to-us place where we went for dinner. Downstairs, they were doing trivia (they also do karaoke every night), so we sat upstairs in the quiet bar area. I got the East Ender burger, and Josh got the Fully Loaded burger.

Friday, September 26

No rain! Thankfully. We made breakfast at the trailer and hung out; I got to do some reading on the porch.

Federal Jack’s: We originally wanted to go somewhere else for lunch in downtown Kennebunkport, but there wasn’t any parking available, so we ended up at Federal Jack’s because they have dedicated restaurant parking.

We sat at the bar and each got Shipyard Pumpkin Head; Josh got the grilled bacon cheddar chicken, and I got a haddock Reuben.

McDougal Orchard: Josh wanted to do a fall activity while we were up in Maine, and we found this orchard that was about 20 minutes from the campground. Josh’s mom came with us, too. There was a farm store in the front, and out in the back were all of the trees. The orchard part was pretty big, so it took us some time to find apples that were ready to pick. Josh and I got enough to make an apple crisp and for him to bring some to work with his lunches. Afterward, we stopped in the farm store and picked up some freshly-made apple cider and mini cider donuts.

Those were our main activities of the day, since we would be leaving Friday night to come back home. We took Pennie for a walk around the campground and checked out some of the Halloween decorations that were up. (The campground closes in mid-October before Halloween, so they were celebrating it that weekend with different events.)

We made an easy dinner before leaving around 6:00 p.m., and, as always, I fell asleep in the car during the ride through New Hampshire.

In case you missed my other recaps from our trips to Maine this year:
