Maine 2024: Part 1

Our annual long weekend Maine trip has come and gone! Josh and I are sad to be back home from vacation, so at least we can relive it through my blog posts.

We went up to Maine for a few days last month for our three-year anniversary, and we were excited to go back this month. Josh’s family has a trailer at a campground in Kennebunk where we stay—trust me, it’s nice, has running water, electricity, AC, etc.

Wednesday, August 7

Josh worked the morning shift at work that day, so he got out around 11:30 a.m., so we planned on leaving for Maine in the early afternoon. I took the full day off to pack in the morning and was ready by lunchtime. It took us a little over three hours to get to Maine; we, unfortunately, hit traffic because of an accident halfway through Massachusetts.

Where We Went/What We Did

River Junction Brewing: This was our first time going here! It’s about 15 minutes from where we stay, and it was totally worth going. We went after dinner; Josh and I both got flights.

Fire + s’mores: Once the sun went down, Josh made a fire out in the backyard. Well, tried to make a fire. Some of the wood was wet from rain earlier in the day, so it was a struggle to keep it going. Eagle Scout Josh was able to keep the fire alive, thanks to some lighter fluid, long enough that we could make s’mores.

What We Ate

Dinner: made at the trailer. We made pasta and meatballs and a salad, nothing too fancy. Before dinner, we ran out to Hannaford (local grocery store) to get some food for the few days we would be at the trailer, mostly so we could make breakfasts.

Other Notes

Josh’s mom and family pup, Pennie, were at the trailer with us again!

Thursday, August 8

Where We Went/WHAT WE did

Gooch’s Beach: This beach is located in Kennebunk, about 20 minutes from the trailer. We went last year, and I really wanted to have another beach day this year. Thursday was looking to be one of the good weather days.

One perk of this beach is that you don’t have to schlep through the sand dunes to get there. Parking is right along the sidewalk, and Josh has a parking pass for the beach. And got to show off his parallel parking skills. We bought a new beach canopy from Amazon so we don’t have to take the big pop-up tent from my parents. The new tent is awesome and so easy to set up. (We also saw two other groups with the same exact tent set up on the beach.)

I read for part of the day, in between going in the water twice and walking down the entire length of the beach. Meanwhile, Josh made friends with some bros who were camped out in front of us and looked like they forgot a bottle opener for their beer (which, I mean, you’re not really supposed to have on the beach anyway but we’re not the beach police); he offered the opener on his keys to them, and we ended up getting solo cups of beer out of it, sooo.

The waves in Maine are a lot bigger than the ones I’m used to in Connecticut. Some are small but others are bigger that you basically have to jump through so you don’t get knocked over.

Then later on after dinner, Josh and I met his mom and Pennie at the beach. Dogs are allowed after 5:00 p.m., so they like to take Pennie to run off some energy.

What We Ate

Breakfast: made at the trailer. Eggs, toast, yogurt, and some fruit.

Lunch: sandwiches at the beach. Why do sandwiches taste better at the beach? We made quick ones in the morning before we left and also brought chips, strawberries, and some cut-up watermelon.

Dinner: The Ocean Roll. I’ve never had a lobster roll, which seems like something you have to get while you’re in Maine. This place is a food truck that’s set up on a corner in Kennebunk but has been there for years and had good reviews on Google.

Josh and I got cold lobster rolls (with mayo), coleslaw, split a side of fries, and sodas. I actually liked the lobster roll! It’s hard to describe the taste but I liked it. (See below, it will explain why I didn’t include any photos…)

Shain’s of Maine: Always a favorite place for us to go when we’re in Maine. I got Dino Crunch and Josh got strawberry.

Other Notes

So. I wish I had a better ending to the lobster roll story, but… it seems like I got food poisoning from it. I was up from midnight to about 2:00 a.m. the night after in the bathroom. I was originally sort of nervous to try the lobster roll because my dad has a shellfish allergy that we weren’t sure if it was passed onto me. But I didn’t have any allergic reaction symptoms after eating the lobster roll; I just got really sick about six hours later.

Josh didn’t really have any issues, so I don’t know if it was food positioning or my body just didn’t like the lobster roll. And I’m blaming the lobster roll because it was the new thing I had eaten that day; everything else I had was food I normally eat.

Whelp, I had a good run. No more lobster for me. I had taken pictures of what we ate but don’t want to scar myself again by including them in the post.
