I’m not sure if this will becoming a recurring post series, but this was a fun way to look back on my weekend and see that I actually had a pretty good one.
Friday, April 5
4:30 pm: Josh and I met my parents for weekly date night—something my parents and I have been doing for years. We go to the same restaurant in town and rotate through a few different waitresses. Our family friends joined us, so we were at a table for six.
One of the first topics of the night was if any of us felt the earthquake earlier in the day. There was a 4.8 magnitude earthquake in New Jersey that was felt up the east coast that morning. Josh and I felt it—at first, we thought the shaking was from Josh vacuuming too aggressively, but then we were like, “That was weird” as my computer monitor and filing cabinet shook/rattled for about five seconds.
6:10 pm: Our weekly grocery shopping trip. Since Josh moved in, we’ve been going after date nights on Fridays. For the most part, the store isn’t super busy, unlike when I used to go by myself on Saturday mornings when I lived alone.
7:00 pm: We got home and unpacked the groceries.
7:30 pm-9:00 pm: I played Animal Crossing and watched the NC State vs South Carolina game while Josh played a game on his computer.
9:30 pm-11:30 pm: Then I stayed up to watch the UConn vs Iowa women’s game, which already started past my bedtime. I watched the first quarter on ESPN but then watched the rest of the game on ESPN2. They had The Bird and Taurasi Show, with Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, which I hadn’t watched before (it reminded me of the Manningcast), and it was actually pretty good.
11:50 pm: Finally time for bed. I think the last time I stayed up this late was New Year’s Eve—and I barely made it to midnight then.
Saturday, April 6
8:30 am: I set my alarm for 7:45 am but hit snooze a few times before laying in bed and then deciding to get up.
9:00 am: Made breakfast of oatmeal with cut-up apples and strawberries, yogurt, and tea. I’ll watch some TV on the couch while I eat, usually the local morning news show or MSNBC.
9:50 am: Since it was cloudy and a bit cool, I opted for riding the stationary bike instead of going for a run or walk. Well, it seemed like a good idea until I realized our stationary bike was broken. It has the ability to adjust the riding position, and I realized that the twisty knob that adjusts that snapped off. I texted Josh and asked him if he had trouble recently with the bike and that I thought it was broken. Since I was already in workout clothes, I figured it was worth doing something, so I did this video on YouTube. It kicked my butt, but hey, at least it was something.
10:45 am-12:45 pm: Took a quick shower, looked into ideas for a pre-birthday trip for me in May (I have a location in mind, I’m just looking at places for us to go), drew a new bookmark for myself, and ate lunch. I also finished watching the last half of the new FBI episode.
1:00 pm-5:00 pm: Blanket burrito time! Josh got home from work, said hi, and then said “Alright I’ll leave you alone now.” Saturday is usually my “me time” day, a carry-over from my days of living alone. I finished reading Chain-Gang All-Stars and sort of started The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle before I got about 40 pages in and had no clue what was going on. Then I watched a few episodes of Alert Missing Persons Unit.
5:15 pm-5:45 pm: Dinner time. We had leftovers from Thursday (Josh made this in the crockpot), so it was just warming up the chicken and assembling the sandwiches. We also ordered a new stationary bike from Amazon, the same one we already have, just in a different color.
6:30 pm: We went on a little ice cream date together. Last year, we found a new-to-us place that’s about 15 minutes away, and it’s super cute. We were the only ones there—it was cloudy and cold—and we ate inside the little shop. I got Monkey Bones, which was a banana-based ice cream with peanut butter swirl and chocolate chips, and Josh got mint chocolate chip.
7:15 pm: Then we went to Target. Our main goal of the trip was to get a new Nintendo Switch game (Mario Party Superstars) and a new controller, but of course, I had to wander around and buy things (thankfully I had gift cards): this dress, this shirt, these earrings, this candle, and this basket (which we’re using to hold all of our Switch stuff under the TV stand).
Josh got a cart when we first went into the store and very quickly we realized it was making noise. Something was wrong with a front wheel and it was making a buzzing noise, so, of course, Josh would “rev” the cart to make the noise louder as we walked in the store. He took a video and posted it on his Instagram story; I shared it to mine and added “Josh is literally the worst and I should have left him at Target.”
8:00 pm: Finally home, and Josh spent most of the time continuing to annoy me until he went to bed.
8:50 pm-11:00 pm: I stayed up to watch the UConn vs. Alabama men’s game, and I started reading I Alone Can Fix It. Reading and Animal Crossing are the only ways I can possibly stay up to watch these late-start games.
11:00 pm: Then off to bed.
Sunday, April 7
8:15 am: I set my alarm for 7:30 am but again snoozed for a bit before finally getting up.
8:30 am: Made breakfast of eggs, toast, and yogurt with a cup of tea, and watched some TV. This is my normal breakfast routine on the weekends.
9:15 am-10:00 am: Changed out of my pajamas into comfy clothes, washed my breakfast dishes, and cleaned up a bit in the kitchen.
10:00 am: I left the condo to meet my parents at Sherwin Williams.
10:15 am-10:30 am: I briefly mentioned a few posts ago that I’m going to re-paint my kitchen cabinets. When I first moved in, it was something I wanted to do but never got around to. I randomly decided last month that I wanted to do it, so my parents offered to go with me to get paint. The cabinets are currently a super dark brown, and I want to paint the upper cabinets a cream color and the lower cabinets a sage green color.
Since I already had the paint swatches Josh and I decided on, it was super easy to get a gallon of each along with a can of primer. My dad is coming over this upcoming weekend to drop off paint supplies and give me a crash course. But I figure since I completely re-did my bedroom at home in December 2020, I can paint some kitchen cabinets; Josh will be helping, too, so that’ll be nice.
10:45 am-12:45 pm: I cleaned the bathrooms, put away some random things, wrote out my upcoming week in my notebook, watched Bar Rescue, played Animal Crossing, and had lunch.
1:00 pm-5:00 pm: I watched The Antisocial Network: Memes to Mayhem on Netflix, made an iced coffee, watched an episode of Bar Rescue, and then watched the women’s national championship game on The Bird and Taursai Show (again) while reading I Alone Can Fix It. Josh played a game on his computer in the living room with me; it’s called Runescape and I’m not really sure what it’s about but I know there are mythical creatures and his character can talk to a cat named Pickles.
It really didn’t matter to me who won the game, but I’m happy South Carolina won and kept their undefeated season.
5:10 pm-5:30 pm: Josh and I made dinner together: my mom’s goulash recipe. We usually make dinner together on the weekends since we’re both home and we’ll divide up the tasks.
5:30 pm-6:15 pm: Eating dinner (which always takes less time than actually making the meal), clean up, and washing dishes.
6:30 pm-7:00 pm: Josh and I went for a walk in the neighborhood. We have a normal route we take that’s about 1.5 miles. We walked by a house where a few people were talking outside by a driveway, and the dog in the backyard of the house barked at us; one of the people joked and said we could take him but have him back by 8:00.
7:30 pm-9:15 pm: Josh and I played Mario Party Superstars, and it was a lot of fun! I ended up winning the main board game, and then we played a few minigames. We also split a bag of popcorn for a snack.
9:30 pm-10:00 pm: Bedtime! I read a bit before lights out.
I mean, overall, not an exciting weekend but I think productive. And, honestly, what most of my weekends look like.
I always tell myself I’m going to get up “early” on the weekends but then I usually drag myself out of bed between 8:30 and 9:00. I mean, I don’t have any pressing responsibilities on the weekends, so I could stay in bed as long as I wanted. I don’t know why I feel this pressure to get up early and get things done right away when I always have enough time to get everything done.
Most of life is just mundane things, the routine things, the same things you did last week that you have to do again this week. I don’t mind having weekend plans, but I really look forward to weekends where I don’t have much going on.
