St. Patrick’s Day Weekend Recap

My uncle’s—my mom’s brother—60th birthday was Friday, and my dad’s 60th was on Saturday. They grew up together and were friends, and that’s how my parents met. On Friday, we went out to dinner with my uncle to celebrate both of their birthdays. He lives ~a half hour away, and we normally see him every few months. (We must have a thing about close birthdays in my family because I was born on my mom’s birthday. Granted I was a week late, but still.)

On Saturday, my mom and I gave my dad his gifts. There’s a big package store—like picture a grocery store sized package store with every beer, wine, and cheese you could imagine—20 minutes away from my house that I love going to. You can make your own six pack of beer, so I got six individual beers that my dad likes, and I also got him a four pack of cans. My mom picked up little treats for him, like Slim Jims, Hershey bars, a box of Good & Plenty, and Twinkies. We also got him a Detroit Tigers t-shirt.

Saturday was also the day of the 10K I was supposed to run. I decided last month that I was going to sit it out this year because I didn’t feel ready. One of my coworkers ran in the race, so he picked up my bib and t-shirt for me on Friday, which I got today. I thought I had trained enough, but I didn’t want to push myself too far.

So instead, I watched the Red Sox spring training game and read. I’m currently reading Beartown, which has been on my want to read shelf since last year. I put it on hold at the library last week because every time I went to look for it, it was checked out. I really really like it so far, and I have about a hundred pages left.

Every Friday, my parents and I have date night at a restaurant in town, and since we went to out to dinner with my uncle on Friday, date night got moved to Saturday. We always have the same waitress—with a backup in case she’s not there. For the holiday, they always have a boiled dinner and Reubens. I discovered last year that I loved Reubens—I don’t know what I was doing for the first 23 years of my life—and I was so excited to get one for dinner.

Since it was St. Patrick’s Day weekend, my mom made a boiled dinner—corned beef, potatoes, carrots, and cabbage—but last year and this year she made it into corned beef hash. It’s literally the best thing ever. It’s a combination of everything from the dinner plus beets ground all together, and then she cooks it down on the stove top. I had some for dinner with fried eggs Sunday before I went to work, and I’ll have it for breakfast this week.

I scooped last night, and although it was cold, I saw some doggos. I work one day a week, which I’m totally cool with after working three to four times a week all last summer. (And yes, the ice cream shop is already open. We’ve been open for almost a month, and people are surprised we open in February. We have for the last nine seasons I’ve worked there.)

How was your weekend? Did you do anything for St. Patrick’s Day?

  1. Beartown sounds like such a good book! I’m hoping to be able to read it soon.

We didn’t really do much for St. Patrick’s Day this year which was really kind of sad. I spent a lot of time with my family on Saturday. On Sunday we had a friend over for dinner and played a board game. I live such an exciting life. 🙂

  2. Sounds like such a nice weekend! The gift you got your dad is so cute! I am definitely going to remember that for future gifts. This weekend I got ice cream at my favorite spot and did a St Patrick’s Day bar crawl with some friends!

  3. Sounds like a good weekend!! We went out to dinner with friends on Friday for pizza and green beer, then came back to our house to chill and hangout. Saturday we also had some friends over that evening for a bit, and watched a movie. and Sunday, we slept in, took our pup to the park for a hike, and relaxed. 🙂 I feel like I normally celebrate St. Patrick’s Day more, but oh well.
