I’ve lived in New England my entire life, all 24 years I’ve been on this Earth. I like where I live, and I know I should explore more of the area than I have because there are a lot of historical places to visit plus some other fun stuff.
New Englanders are known for being obnoxious Patriots fans, our fall foliage, Dunkin’, and saying “wicked” a lot. Oh, and, our ridiculous weather.
We experience all four seasons throughout the year: winter, spring, summer, and fall. And if we’re lucky enough, we experience all four in the same week!
For example: last week was the fourth week of January. It’s definitely winter here, and yeah, it gets cold. We’re used to it. The weekend before we got a snowstorm—only our second significant snowfall of the season so far—and after that storm, a cold front came through. IT WAS TWO DEGREES ON MONDAY. THAT’S TWO DEGREES MORE THAN ZERO DEGREES.

Now I’m sure most New Englanders think they have thick skin and can withstand chilly temperatures. But you also have to take into account the wind and the “feels like” temperature. It was at least ten degrees below zero. It was COLD.
AND THEN
On Thursday, it rained all day. I’ll let you guess what the temperature was.
What are some of your best guesses?
IT WAS 50 DEGREES.
FIFTY.
It was literally TWO degrees outside three days before. The rain washed away most of the ~10 inches of snow that were on the ground, and it made everything mucky and mushy.
Now that I work on a college campus and travel outside to various buildings throughout the day, I have to get back into the groove of dressing for the outside. I wore my Bean Boots into work every day last week and brought flats to wear in the office because I had to trudge through the parking lot in the slush and muck and didn’t want to ruin my shoes. (Bean Boots are one of the best investments I’ve made. I got them four years ago and use them as my winter and rain boots. I have the shorter ones.)
It looks like the weather is back to normal for this week: temperatures in the mid-30s before dropping down to the high teens/low-20s by the end of the week. I keep all of my winter stuff handy but also by in-between-winter-and-spring stuff handy, too. You can’t completely put everything away because you can’t trust Mother Nature.
I just want it to be 70 degrees and slightly breezy. That’s all I ask for.

Our weather was crazy last week: -25 and snowy and icy and then the next day plus 4 and raining and then everything froze over night again after the raining. It was insane!
Today it’s tons of snow!! Legit people are pushing their car up the road right outside my house right now. PUSHING THEIR CARS UP A SNOW COVERED HILL! That’s how bad it is. It’s totally insane

Ugh that sounds miserable! Why are they out driving if you got that much snow? I never understand why people go out in bad weather and then wonder why they get stuck. It’s an excuse to stay home!

Because they are all stupid! Lol I literally sat on the couch being “omg look at this idiot!!” While the teenage Chinese girls laughed at me behind me haha so many idiots! My favourite was a little red convertible that got stuck in the slush this morning haha

I am definitely with ya on this one. I don’t mind the cold, but it has been brutal in Chicago the past week or so. I am pretty sure it has snowed everyday for over a week. It is supposed to feel like -50 on Wednesday, so I am trying to figure out how to prepare for that haha. Hopefully spring will be here soon so we can both enjoy some sunny, warmer days!!

Yeah, I saw on the news tonight that it’s going to be extreme sub-zero temperatures in the midwest this week. I don’t know how to prepare for a feels like of -50. (And I hope to never have to.) Limit your time outside as much as you can and just bundle up! Stay warm!

I can relate to this so much! This week in Michigan it’s supposed to get down to -40 ish and then this weekend it will be back up to 45… it’s crazy! There’s no way to prepare for this kind of weather. My co-worker is joking that MI is trying to get winter done in one week.

Some people assume I wasn’t born and raised in New England because I hate winter soooo much. I keep meaning to move south, but I just love the area so much and like being close to my family. But I can really do without the snow and ice and cold. Eughh.

I like the area, too, but the snow and cold is just unnecessary. It feels like December isn’t all that bad because of the holidays and then you’re slapped in the face by January and it’s all sub-zero temperatures and a polar vortex is coming. It’s not going to be warm until like April, and it seems sooo far away.

Definitely agree! January and February feel like the worst. At least March usually has hints of warmth to it (and I’m biased because it’s my birthday month, so it never feels too bad!).

Your weather really does sound crazy and miserable to deal with! It would be hard to prepare for how different your weather could be in a week, I think. I’m a bit over how cold it gets after a snowstorm with the bitter wind! While it’s snowing, it’s fine, but afterwards, it’s just hard to cope with the cold! I hope your area warms up before too long! 🙂

Thankfully I’m used to the whole “all four seasons in a week!” thing but it puts a damper on my day to day outfits haha. I carry a hat and gloves in my purse at all times. I like when it snows, too, but agree that the aftermath sucks. And thanks! It probably won’t be warm/a consistent temperature until like April, so we have a way to go.

You definitely know the weather where I am and how I feel about winter, BUT I am curious if you say “wicked” lol. I have a friend that moved to Boston back when we were kids and last time I saw her she was so obnoxious about it and now I’m curious if you are like that XD

I’m very jealous of your weather. Please kidnap me during the winter and bring me to Texas. I do say “wicked” a lot. I don’t have a Boston/MA accent at all, and I don’t really know if Connecticut has one. I was once told I sort of have a CT one because I sometimes don’t pronounce “T”s in certain words but I don’t know if that’s a common CT thing or not. I’m not obnoxious, though, promise haha.

I feel you! When I moved to Georgia to go to college, I thought it would be 70 degrees all the time. I was wrong. It was 23 degrees this morning. I find that to be unacceptable. And you know what? Next Tuesday, it will be 70. Kids were actually complaining this week because they thought school should’ve been cancelled because of the cold weather. I can’t make this stuff up. They would never last in Boston, let alone anywhere in the North ahahaha.

We tend to make fun of people in the south when it snows there because they get a dusting and cities shut down haha. We get a foot here and it’s like, yeah, business as usual. But moving to a different part of the country requires a weather adjustment. I’m very jealous that it’s going to be 70 next week where you are. It’s supposed to hit 40 this Sunday, so we’re looking forward to that, knowing we’re going to get hit with sub-zero feels like temps tomorrow.
