You know when you’re sitting around and either you don’t have anything to do, or you’re completely forgetting a million things you should be doing?
I have a bunch of different hobbies, and for some reason, I feel guilty when I’m not doing one of them. I seem to fill the void with Netflix, which I mean isn’t always a bad thing. But am I making good use of my spare time?
After sort of participating in NaNoWriMo this year, I know I should be working on my story. I’m halfway through it, and the story is outlined, but I don’t want to force myself to write when I’m not feeling it.
I’m trying to stick to a somewhat regular running schedule, aiming for three times a week. This seems to be the only thing I’m sticking with, and I think that’s because I don’t want to die at the 10k I’m running in March.
I picked up crocheting earlier this year and went through a phase of making mug cozies. I recently started making a scarf, and it’s about 75% done. I definitely don’t do it as much as I should, and it’s just sitting in my room, waiting to be completed.
I haven’t been reading as much, even at night. That’s something I want to get back into each night. I’m reading my adulting book, so hopefully I pick up a few tips about being a functional adult.
Another only consistent thing I’ve been doing is writing on here. I try my best to publish posts on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule, and I’ll often pre-write the posts and schedule them out, and then check comments and reply during the week. Maybe I just have more to say on here, because I can really write about whatever I want. Plus I like to see all of your comments!
I know I can’t possibly do all of it at once, but I find myself feeling guilty if I’m doing one thing but not another. There are some days when I come home from work—like one night last week—and it felt like I hit a wall. I showered and then curled up on the couch and watched television. I could work on trying to write my story a few times a week, maybe aim for a page or 400 words each time. Just plug away at it. And make an effort to read every night before bed.
I think it’s all about balance in the end. Making sure I do a little bit of everything but not feel bad when I’m not doing it all.
How do you make time for your hobbies?
