Life Update

I’ve been all over the place lately, so I thought I’d drop in what I’ve been up to lately.

Work: I still really like my new job. I’m mostly settled in now—I have access to just about everything I’d need access to—and I’ve covered a few events on campus for social media. I’m also doing website updates and changes for different departments and offices on campus.

Every year, my department participates in something called the Festival of Trees, which is done by a local boys and girls club. Organizations and businesses set up and decorate a tree in a venue, and people can put in raffle tickets to try to win a tree. Our theme for the tree this year is “No Two Students are Alike”, and it’s going to be full of snowflakes. We ordered wooden snowflakes and we’re going to have students decorate them in the dining commons, and we also got white glitter snowflakes, regular Christmas ball ornaments in the school’s colors—blue and gold—and I offered to make a snowflake tree topper out of popsicle sticks. We’re working on gathering gifts to put under the tree, like items from the bookstore, a Keurig, and an Amazon Echo. We’re going to set up the tree next Friday, and I’m hoping to do a post about it!

Running: I’ve signed for a 10k in March, so I’m starting to train for that. Because of my schedule, I’ve been running about once a week, which I’d like to increase over the next few months. I ran on the track at work a few times, and I ran outside on Sunday because it was really nice. And I ran four miles! Four! I didn’ t know it was humanly possible for me.

Reading: Here’s what I’ve read lately:

  • From the Corner of the Oval by Beck Dorey-Stein
  • Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren
  • Yes, We (Still) Can by Dan Pfeiffer
  • Never Tell by Alafair Burke—currently reading

I bought Adulting: How to Become a Grown-Up in 535 Easy-Ish Steps by Kelly Williams Brown. I’ve read a few other “self-help”y books, so I’m hoping this one can help me be a better adult.

Watching: I have about five episodes left of season four of The Blacklist. I’m obsessed with it, and I don’t know what I’m going to watch since season four is the last one on Netflix.

Extracurriculars: I voted yesterday, because #America. I voted in the last two presidential elections, and this was my first mid-term elections. My mom wanted us to vote, and we—she, myself, and my dad—knew it was important to vote in this election. My dad and I left work a little early so we could go vote, and then we went out to dinner. I spent the rest of the night watching the results come in.

I’m also participating in NaNoWriMo this month. I’m on day seven of writing. My big goal would be to reach 50,000 words, but my more manageable goal is to write every day. I write for a half hour or so during my lunch, and I write at night after I shower and before I join my mom to watch TV around 8:00 p.m or so. Any words of motivation throughout the month will be greatly appreciated!

I’m going to a wine and beer tasting and food/raffle event this Friday with one of my old co-workers, Kristen. The event is put on by another local boys and girls club, and my old boss is involved with the club, so I’m able to get tickets through her. I went the last two years, and it’s always a lot of fun.

I can’t believe it’s already November! Thanksgiving will be here soon, and then Christmas. My mom is already playing Christmas music in the house, which I don’t really mind. I have to start planning my Christmas decorations for my office. I’m going to go all out 🙂

What have you been up to lately? Anything fun? Did you vote? Any good book reads? Any Netflix suggestions? Share one happy thing in the comments!

  1. Ahh! What did you think of Josh & Hazel’s Guide?! That’s awesome that you’re writing every night. You’ll reach the 50,000 words in no time! Hope you have a blast at the wine & beer tasting! ♡ I’m already listening to the Christmas music, too. 😉

    • I liked the book! It was cute and an easy read. I didn’t get to write yesterday, so I feel thrown off my game, so I’m making myself write tonight. The tasting was a lot of fun last night! I got to see my old boss, and the wine and beer selection was pretty good. Do you have a favorite Christmas song?

  2. Love this post! I have pretty much been working, running, cooking, and sleeping. I do keep up with some shows and am trying to find a show to start on Netflix or Hulu that I like. Recently I watched Haunting of Hill House (I think that’s what it’s called lol). I don’t recommend it. It was too long. I do like the Good Place and This Is Us to keep up with during the week.

    • Wasn’t that Haunting show scary? I feel like I’ve been seeing people talking about it on social media. I’ve never watched The Good Place or This Is Us, but I’ve heard both are good. I think The Good Place is on Netflix? How has your running been going?

      • I didn’t think it was scary. The show was kind of slow so it was hard for it to be scary if that makes sense. Running has been ok! Trying to run more frequently, but didn’t run at all this weekend. I have been going back and forth about doing a half marathon in the spring, but I can’t commit yet haha. How’s your running going?

      • Do the half! I’d totally support you in your quest. Plus it’s in the spring so you’d have some time to train.

My running is okay. I still can’t figure out a good running schedule. I went running yesterday and got 4 miles in, and it actually felt pretty good and my breathing was under control. I think I’d be able to run 6 miles if I had the time. I can run 4 miles in about 45 minutes, which I think is good. My goal is just to finish the race, but my goal time is about 70 minutes (since my 5k with a little bit of walking is around 35 minutes).

      • I think I should too! Making time for longer runs will definitely be a challenge in the winter. Finding good times to run is hard especially with work, which is something I am finding out more each day lol. I’m sure you will reach that goal. It sounds like you are off to a good start!
