How I Keep Track of my Runs + My Running Playlist

Since I started running more seriously earlier this year, I wanted to keep track of my runs to see my progress when I was training for my 5k. At first, I was just keeping track in the notes section of my phone, but I felt like it was getting messy with the more runs I put in.

So I created a Google spreadsheet. It’s actually two sheets. The first is my list of 5k runs in my area for the end of this year and next year with the name, date, how much it is to register, when to register by, and the race’s website. I did it so I wouldn’t miss any runs that I wanted to do and so I can keep track of how much money I’m spending on registration.

I have it organized by month, and the total miles calculates as I put in my runs. The (N)’s in the run description stand for “neighborhood” runs; when I used to run on my old high school’s track more, I marked those runs with a (T).

I sync up my Fitbit when I run, and I also use the RunKeeper app by Asics. It’s easier for me, though, to see them in the spreadsheet. Plus I can keep track of my total miles. For 2019, I’ll start a new spreadsheet.

My current running playlist

There have been some staples that have remained on my playlist since college, but I try to change it up with new songs so that it doesn’t get stale.

Do you keep track of your runs? What’s on your running playlist?

  1. Youngblood is definitely on my running playlist too. Your spreadsheet is so nice and organized. I like how you incorporate the 5k races in there too. In the past I used an app to track my runs/cross training, but I cannot remember what it’s called lol. Right now I don’t track my runs, so I usually just track the time that I run! But as always, love the running posts 🙂

    • Being organized makes me feel like I have my life together when I really don’t haha. I like to see my progress, too, and I feel like I can see it better in a spreadsheet than in the apps because the apps sometimes are messy… like too many things are going on. And I’m glad someone enjoys my running posts 🙂

  2. Love your organization skills. I love spreadsheets for keeping track of money and spending, but I just use mapmyrun and Garmin to keep track of runs. I’ve been using mapmyrun since 2014 so I kind of want to keep recording stuff there, and Garmin has its own calendar. Most of my playlist music is from the 80s and 90s because you really never stop listening to what you listened to as a kid/teen. 🙂

    • I like to see how others track their runs, because I feel like we all do it differently. I just started running more “seriously” this year so I’m still fairly new to the world of running haha. Haha your playlist sounds awesome!

  3. This is awesome! i’ve been trying to figure out the best way to track since i’ve been so inconsistent with running lately! I may have to steal this idea from you!
I used to use the Nike Running App & it was awesome but now I usually just track mine on my apple watch, but its hard when you don’t have a running plan at the moment!

    • I don’t have a running plan anymore either, mostly because I don’t have any upcoming races. I’m trying to run at least a few times a week but with my schedule lately, it’s hard.

  4. I like the idea of a spreadsheet to track your runs. I currently use Strava and Movescount, but maybe a spreadsheet would be more visual and motivating…

    • I like using a spreadsheet because I can add in notes about the runs. I use Nike Run Club, but my runs in the app are a little longer because I’ll walk after I finish my running, so the times are higher. Once I hit how far I want to run, I’ll remember what that time was and put that into my sheet so it’s a little more realistic. (Hoping that makes sense haha.)

      • I heard of many runners keeping a “run diary” of some sorts, so I guess it’s a popular option. I just track everything with my Suunto watch and it syncs with Strava, but I rarely put notes. Do you find it helps you measure your progress?
