Exploring More Out of My Comfort Zone

I went up to Boston—or rather, shipped up to Boston—last week for marketing conference for work. Aside from having to get up at 4:30 a.m. to leave Western Massachusetts by 6:00 a.m., it was a good day—it was even better when I realized the hotel was next to The Lawn on D.

I’ve been to Boston a handful of times, and I want to go so much more. I’d rather go to Boston than NYC any day. I went to the science museum when I was younger, and I’ve been to Fenway four times. We went to the seaport area one day during senior week in college. (My roommates and I snuck out of the comedy show we were at and went bar hopping instead.) Plus I went up there for an expo for a client in March at the convention center.

That being said, I definitely need to get out more. To Boston, to really anywhere. I’ve lived in the same town my whole life, and I normally don’t travel further than a twenty-mile radius around my house. So when I do get out of the area, I’m reminded that there’s so much more out there. And I need to get out there.

One of my mom’s friend’s daughters moved to New York City three years ago to be a hairdresser. She worked around here for a while but wanted to move to NYC, so she did. She’s such a free spirit, and she’s doing well down there and loves it. I wish I had the guts to do that. Just pick up my life and move.

I’m still trying to get my bearings two years of out of college, and I’m okay where I am right now. But I know there are so many opportunities out there for me in the future. I’d love to end up in Boston or even in the suburbs—just close to the city.

I want to make more of an effort to travel more places, even if it’s just in New England to start. Ya girl has never been on a plane, so that’s a big thing I’ll have to conquer at some point. Day trips around the area would be fun and reasonable to do. I just need to find a travel partner…

Do you explore your local area? Do you feel like you want to move somewhere new one day? What’s your advice for just picking up your life and going to another city?

  1. Sometimes I’ll walk to local places near me and if I’m feeling dangerous I’ll walk downs streets I don’t normally use, just to see what’s there. Does that count as adventurous? I do feel like I want to move somewhere else some day, if I ever figure out how to do it. I liked my university town because it was small and quiet. Don’t know if I could ever live in a place like Toronto, it’s too busy for me.

    • I feel like you walking down random streets could lead to a Law & Order episode, so stay out of those dark alleys, okay? It’s mostly finances holding me back from moving anywhere, even just out of my parent’s house. (Hey thanks mom and dad for not kicking me out yet.) I’d maybe like to find a happy medium: close enough to the city that it’s easy to travel in but not quite in so that it’s a little quieter. But if you lived in Toronto you could see the crumbling Rogers Centre all the time!

      • I did have a stranger call me to their car once. They wanted directions, but for a few seconds there I wasn’t sure. Actually, if I lived in an apartment building near Rogers Centre and were on the 50th floor or higher, I’d be able to see into the stadium from balcony when the have the roof open.

  2. When I was 20, I jammed all my things in my car and took off to Ft.Lauderdale, FL from Memphis, TN! I had 700 bucks in my account. I stayed there for 3 years before I made my return home. I learned so much about everything while I was there. It was rough at first but I made it work. I had no skill, trade, or degree to work with and I was relying on my veteran status to get jobs and I pulled it off.

    You have a lot going for you! I’m sure you would land a sweet job in any city of your liking. Life’s too short and the world is too large to stay local. I’m sure you’ll take a leap of faith someday!

    • I have to give you a lot of credit for doing that! Sometimes I wish I could do that but I’m the kind of person that has to plan everything out so I’d try my best to plan the entire thing, but I think with things like that, you can’t really plan much and you just have to see what happens.

      Finances are holding me back at the moment, so I might have to wait a little while longer. But living at home is helping me save. For now, though, I’ll stick with day trips and see where I end up in five years. Who knows.
